New vs. Used Hobart Equipment: A Buyer’s Honest Comparison

When I first started managing equipment purchasing for a 40-person repair and fabrication shop, I assumed used equipment was the obvious smart move. A used Hobart meat saw for sale at 40% off the new price? A Hobart 140 Handler MIG welder at half the cost? That was a no-brainer, right?

Then I learned what wasn’t in the listing photos.

This isn’t an anti-used sermon. This is a comparison of new vs. used Hobart equipment, based on the five costs that actually decide the right choice: total cost, reliability, tool fit, parts, and support.

The Comparison Framework: Price Is Only the First Dimension

Most “new vs. used” comparisons start and end with the sticker price. That is how I used to think. In fact, I used to make recommendations almost entirely on purchase price. Then a $2,800 repair bill taught me that equipment buying is a total-cost problem, not a price-tag problem.

The real comparison should run across five dimensions:

  1. Total cost after setup and repairs
  2. Reliability and downtime risk
  3. Whether the tool actually fits your work
  4. Parts availability and sourcing
  5. Support for small buyers

I’ll walk through each one using the two product categories I know best: commercial meat saws and welding equipment.

Dimension 1: Upfront Price vs. Total Cost

Here is where used equipment wins on paper. Let’s say you find a used Hobart meat saw for sale at auction for $1,800. The same current model might list near $7,000 from an authorized dealer. That looks like a $5,200 win before you touch the machine.

But the total cost doesn’t stop at the hammer price. In 2022, I bought a used meat saw from a restaurant liquidator. I paid $1,550 for the saw, $350 for freight, $220 for a new blade and table plate, and $680 for a technician to fix the tensioner. That’s $2,800, and I still had a saw with no warranty. The used saw was still cheaper than new, but the gap shrank fast.

As of January 2025, a used Hobart 140 Handler MIG welder typically lists for $300 to $450 on resale sites, while a new unit lists around $600 to $700. The savings are real. But the real question is what you do with the machine after you get it.

Used wins in absolute cash. New wins on predictability.

Dimension 2: Reliability and Downtime

For a small shop, downtime is the cost that acts like a hidden tax. If a new machine has a problem, the manufacturer’s support line is a phone call away. A used machine can sit in the bay while you wait for a part you didn’t know existed.

This is the point where I made my biggest mistake. In 2023, we bought a used Hobart 140 Handler MIG welder for a side project. I tested it for five seconds, noted that the arc fired, and paid the man. Two weeks later, the wire feed started stuttering. I opened up the drive assembly: chewed-up liner, worn feed roll, and a loose ground connection. Total parts: $85. Total downtime: two days.

The most surprising part? The downtime cost more than the repair. That was the dimension I had ignored completely.

New equipment doesn’t fail because it’s new—but when it fails, someone is responsible.

Dimension 3: Right Tool Category, Not Just Price

This next dimension has nothing to do with new or used. It’s about matching the tool class to the job.

A Hobart 140 Handler MIG welder is a 120-volt MIG package designed for light fabrication, thin steel, and small-shop work. It is not an XMT welding machine. An XMT welding machine, or any multi-process inverter of that class, can handle TIG, stick, and MIG with higher duty cycles. On the other end, a cordless welder gun is a convenient field tool, but it isn’t a replacement for a real MIG welder.

Used prices distort category thinking. A used XMT welding machine can cost less than a new Hobart 140 Handler MIG welder. If you need TIG on 1/4-inch aluminum every day, that might be a rational purchase. But if you need a reliable first welder, choosing an older multi-process machine because it’s cheap is how you buy someone else’s repair history.

Before you compare new vs. used, compare the machine against the job. A cordless welder gun doesn’t compete with a Hobart 140 Handler MIG welder, and a Hobart 140 Handler doesn’t compete with an XMT welding machine on heavy industrial work.

Dimension 4: Parts, Consumables, and the Sourcing Reality

Commercial equipment is only as good as the parts pipeline behind it. Hobart’s common consumables—meat saw blades, drive belts, MIG contact tips, gas valves—are easy to find. That part of ownership is painless.

Problems start when a machine is old or uncommon. One of our welders needed a replacement wear component in the drive assembly. The local distributor said the original part had been superseded by a new design. The only listing I could find was a China welding wear sinter machine part—a sintered wear plate made by an industrial supply manufacturer. I’m not going to pretend the part was bad; it was actually built well. But customs, freight, and a back-and-forth invoice process turned a 10-minute repair into a nine-day fiasco.

When you buy new, parts are easier to identify. When you buy used, you take on the role of parts detective. That is a real skill, and not everyone wants the job.

Dimension 5: Small Customers Aren’t an Afterthought

Here is where I have a strong opinion. Small companies shouldn’t have to choose between being ignored and paying a white-glove premium. Some suppliers treat a $200 order as a bother. The truth is, today’s $200 order can be next year’s $20,000 order.

In my experience, the businesses that understand this are the ones worth keeping. When I called about a used Hobart meat saw for sale that was actually missing a part, the seller connected me to another company that had the part. That didn’t cost them anything, and it earned a loyal customer for the next machine purchase.

New Hobart equipment from an authorized dealer usually comes with technical support, product registration, and clear warranty terms. Used equipment depends entirely on the seller. If the seller won’t answer a simple question before purchase, imagine what they’ll do after the machine breaks.

The “They Don’t Make Them Like They Used To” Myth

The phrase “they don’t make them like they used to” is half true. It applies to cast-iron chassis and accessible mechanical parts. It doesn’t apply to circuit boards, inverter fans, and custom sensor arrays.

This was true 30 years ago, when a stubborn technician could fix almost anything with a drive belt and patience. Today’s machines are smarter, more efficient, and more electronically complicated. That’s not a reason to avoid used equipment—but it is a reason to know which generation you are buying.

So: New or Used?

Here is how I decide now, and it is not based on a single rule.

  • Buy new if the machine will run daily, if you need someone to call when it fails, or if this is your first experience with that product type.
  • Buy used if you have inspected it in person, you know the prior owner, the price is below 50% of new, and you can handle the repair risk.
  • Be careful if the used price is only 20-30% below new. At that point, the savings don’t justify losing the warranty.

There is no universal answer. But if you treat total cost, downtime, tool fit, parts, and support as the real comparison, you will make fewer expensive mistakes than I did. That’s the goal.
